What Is the Reticular Activating System (RAS)?

We are bombarded all day with pieces of information coming into our minds through our senses. However, we can only process so much of that information with our conscious mind. The Reticular Activating System is a filter in the brain that decides what’s worth your attention. Only the most relevant details reach our conscious mind. Think of it as a gatekeeper that helps you focus on what truly matters.

For example:

If you’re at a noisy party and having a conversation with someone, but you suddenly pick up that someone mentions your name across the room. This happens because your RAS alerts you, as your name is highly relevant to you.

You can train your RAS to focus on specific goals. If you keep thinking about something you want, like being more confident, the RAS starts looking for opportunities, resources, and ideas to help you achieve it. So, we need to ensure the RAS stays focused on your goals.

Steps How to Use RAS and Reach Your Goals

  1. Set Clear Goals: Write down your SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals in detail. Be specific about what you want to achieve and why it’s important to you. The more meaning we give to it, the more likely our RAS gets activated.

  2. Visualise Success: Spend a few minutes each day imagining yourself achieving your goals. Use all your senses. What does it feel like? How do you look, and how do you interact with people around you? The more vividly you can picture it, the stronger the signal to your RAS.

  3. Use Affirmations: Repeat positive statements that reinforce your belief in your ability to achieve your goals.

  4. Stay Positive: A positive mindset ensures your RAS focuses on opportunities rather than obstacles. Let go of overthinking about how you need to achieve your goal and trust that your subconscious mind will provide ideas and solutions.

  5. Take Action: Your RAS works best when you combine focus with consistent action. Look for small steps you can take daily toward your goals.

In short, your RAS is a powerful tool helping you focus on what matters most. By setting clear, meaningful goals and reminding your brain to focus on them, you can move closer to achieving your dreams.

Final Thoughts

Goal setting is more than just writing down what you want; it’s about aligning your mind with your desires. By using the power of your Reticular Activating System, you can turn your dreams into reality. You don’t have to know exactly how you are going to achieve your goal—just make sure your mind stays focused on it and start taking small steps. Trust that the rest of the path will become clear in time.
